New York living 101*

*Disclaimer, the following are thoughts, tips, and advice from my personal experience. Results may vary.*

So, I believe last week I promised a NY life tips post… And here it is… I hope I remember everything I want to say! (Sorry, no pics). :-s

Transportation
If you are new to NYC, the subway system can be an intimidating thing, but once you learn it and adjust to the vibe of it all, it’s a great thing to make use of.
-Study a map (but don’t to it in the subway, know where you want to go ahead of time so you can move quickly and smoothly in the station and on the platform.
-Know if you want Uptown or Downtown. Lines and directions are clearly marked… Do read the signs!
-Express or Local… What’s the difference? Well from what I’ve experienced, local trains stop at every stop along their line and express only stop at select stops. Express trains get you to your destination faster, but if your stop is not an express stop … Things can be frustrating.
– Be aware of weekend schedule changes as well as service changes due to construction or maintenance at select stations or select times. Signs are usually posted, but this can really mess up your trip!
– Leave with enough time to get from point A to B. Allow for train delays and foot traffic.
– Always have your MertoCard!
– Lastly, keep to yourself and keep all your personal belongings with you at all times.

FOOD
If you are walking as much as I am, which in this city is kind of a given, you get hungry! Staying well fed and hydrated can help keep you healthy and ready for the city.
– Stay hydrated… Drink water! Not just coffee…
– Eat healthy food… Maintaining a balance of all major food groups. Fruits and vegetables can be hard to buy because they are price and spoil quicker, but still important.
– Maybe don’t eat out everyday… It can really chew a hole in your finances and personally I find it fun to go to the grocery store and prepare my lunch before work.

Personal Time
Regardless of your job(s) or lifestyle… It’s important to remember to take time for yourself!
– New York has tons, and I mean tons, of public parks with running/walking/biking/skating trails, tables and chairs, spacious lawns, and amazing views. Take advantage of these as places to relax, excessive, or both.
– Make an effort to meet up with friends or coworkers to socialize.
– Enjoy a morning/afternoon/evening in with your favorite book or movie and a cup of tea… Stay in, don’t put on those 5 inch heels or your contact lenses… Give your body a rest.
– Find a yoga or dance class or running trail and be sure to set aside so,e time for your health and wellness.
– I’m not saying every day… But some time every week will keep your body and mind fresh so you can always perform your best 🙂

What else…?

– Get used to always being around a lot of different people
– Adjust to the noise and smells of the city
– Be prepared to walk… A LOT!
– The pace of this city is always set on High… And it will keep moving by you– Keep up!!
– I discovered this… The more preconceived ideas you have about New York, the more it proves them false, or at least partly false. Be open minded.
– Yes it’s expensive… I’ve found it really makes me consider what I buy and if I really need the, or just want them. Save and treat yourself to something really special once in a while.
– Wear your walking shoes and carry the fancy heels! Otherwise you really do end up beating up your expensive shoes and your priceless feet. Put on the good shoes when you get where you are headed.
– More or less keep your gaze to yourself… It’s not that New Yorkers are all rude as much as they have things to do and places to be. There are so many people and you see so many things you may never have thought you would see– just don’t respond and move on.

Does this help a little? In the past month and a half I’ve worked to make the transition from tourist to New Yorker. To not get overly distracted by bright lights and store fronts, but to find the lovely small hidden places, where you can see NYC for what it really is– home to many many different people– always a step ahead in fashion perhaps… But home.

Well, I must be off to work soon… I’ve written this from a cozy green seat in Bryant park, smack dab below Times Square. I hope you all enjoy and look out for another post very soon with all the excitement of my life! Haha

<3always,
Christiane

Remember- Don't look up.

You’ve got feet in your shoes,

So steer yourself any direction you choose… And oh the places you’ll go!

~ Dr. Seuss

And may a interject that I’ve been going a lot of places… But we will get there, intro bit first:

Good evening everyone!

Yeah yeah, I know it’s been a minute… But that just means that the have been busy and exciting for me here in the big apple… And that this blog post (hopefully) will be fun and contain lots of good things that are funny!

I think we left off doing laundry with a slight sun burn, which I am happy to report is now a wonderful tan and I think I look great if I do say so myself, thank goodness for summer! (And aloe)

Moving on, it was a busy week at work. The Rain Room continues to draw huge crowds every day, and NYC continues to be a city of unpredictable weather! Some days it’s hot and sunny, other days it just rains non stop… And some days are a little bit of everything, which makes it really hard to dress for a job that’s outside. Knock on wood, the room hasn’t has any major issues or malfunctions, and when we are not catering to frustrating VIPs or fainting patrons, the lines keep moving (just slightly faster then a snail) and all in all things are going well. My coworkers are great and we are so supportive of each other, it makes even rough times manageable, with inside jokes and lots of laughs… Although the other day I’d say we all lost it at the end and couldn’t stop laughing at just about anything! But maybe that’s what happens when you repeat several hundred times a day– “Hi are you here for the Rain Room? And you have a ticket? Ok just to let you now the wait is four to four and a half hours.”

Moving on, I’ve been better this week about running more, some mornings even before work! Which is the habit I’d like to get into. I’ve also discovered, thanks to my awesome roommate, free yoga in the park! Last Tuesday and this Tuesday I’ve gotten up, ran, commuted to midtown and attended yoga, worked n my computer in the park (cause it has tons of seating and Wifi!!!!), then gone on adventures.

20130618-211426.jpg20130618-211436.jpg

Last week I decided I couldn’t take it anymore, I needed to go to Target. After yoga and a lovely afternoon updating my resume for job applications (coming back to this in a second) I hoped on the train to East Harlem and TARGET. Which was just as wonderful as ever. When it was time to head home I thought “I’m really not that far away from home, there’s just a lot of water between here and there…” And with that thought, and the amazing HopStop app, I discovered the walking train from Harlem to Queens and an hour, two bridges, one island, and some map reading issues later I was back in Queens, and feelin good!

20130618-211931.jpg

This week, my after yoga adventures included a walk to Grand Central and then all the way back up 5th Ave. as I looked at different Mac/Apple stores!

And that leads into the next exciting topic….. JOB APPLICATIONS!!! (Ok, maybe I’m making this sound a little more fun then it really is, but still). If I want to stay in NYC (which I do) after July and Rain Room is over, I need to find a longer term job and then long term housing (preferable with my own room, just sayin). So the task of looking through web pages, writing and submitting cover letters and resumes, then waiting to see if anyone responds began. I’ve started with 3 positions I’d be interested in– hospitality at a yoga studio (maybe I miss ACN a little more then I give credit to), the MoMA Design Store… Fancy name for the gift shop, and Apple… Mac… Like the computers (and tablets, phones, MP3 players, etc) 😉
Well, of those 3 (and yes, I’m still looking around), I got an email from Apple yesterday with some follow up questions! So I spent time today composing answers and such for that, hence my asking today to stop by various store locations, to get a slight sense of each one… Gonna try to hit two more tomorrow! If this job comes through I would be really excited, as I love Mac products and it would just be SO COOL!

Yes yes you say… But what about dance? Don’t worry, I didn’t graduate with a degree in Dance Performance for nothing, I just need time to get settled and comfortable, the. I’m jumping right back into a leo… Have no fear 🙂

Goodness, what else has been going on? Lets see…

I took some time to walk around MoMA, and like look at the art hanging on the walls. That was enjoyable. I’ve discovered the 5th floor is my favorite.

Hey mom, remember that 2000 piece puzzle I did of “Starry Night”? Loved it right?!?! Haha, JK

Speaking of mom… She’s coming up for a visit next week… And I of course get to come up with an action packed, sight seeing, fun filled itinerary! It’s in the works as I type.

Otherwise, things have been pretty chill here. I had a craving for nachos, so I made some at the apartment… Megan (roommate) and I went out for FroYo last night and it was amazing! Made me think of Yogurt Tap in Decatur and all the fun times had there. This could also be a problem, because if I find myself wanting FroYo, I know where it is… And it’s SO CLOSE!

Oh! Yesterday I explored a new train and part of town as I traveled to West Harlem to catch up with my high school friend Imari, who also just moved to NYC. Although we hadn’t kept in touch much through college, as we really ended up going our separate ways, it was nice to catch up and talk with an old friend.

Well, that’s about it. I know I’m an old lady, but it’s 9:40 and I’m bout ready for bed… Especially if I want to get in a run tomorrow morning (maybe… Don’t hold me to it though).

There may be another post coming sooner then later with not so much experiences of the week, but of New York tips and thoughts… But that’s a different mind set for me, so not tonight… But zoom, cause I think you all would be interested!

And on that note… So long, farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, adieu… Adieu, adieu, To you and you and you.

Someone please name that tune, film, something…
And as always feel free to comment, like, and share!

This is real life

it’s my real life and I’m trying to enjoy every minute of it!

Hi all, it has been an exciting week between work, outings, and adventures! Of course, my camera has been through it all, so expect lots of pictures! This can make up for the past few posts without them.

Earlier this week I took myself into the city in search of Loemanns and DSW, both of which I found near Union Square area and both of which are HUGE. Like no joke, the Loemanns here has 4 levels and so many clothes! I walked around for a while and tried on some very gorgeous sunglasses (something coming up on my list of items that need to be replaced). After that I walked to DSW, which as you can see from the sign–

20130609-221058.jpg

is also enormous! I’m still holding out on shoes, as to get the most out of the pairs I have without risking hurting my feet. I tried on some very promising things… Then headed over to Starbucks for an ice coffee treat and some quiet time to check emails and enjoy AC.

20130609-221159.jpg

I walked around and enjoyed the park for a bit, read some of “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes”, my latest page turner, before hoping back on the very wonderful N/Q and heading home.

20130609-221318.jpg

Thursday after some early hours at work was roomie day with Megan who took me on a “5 Borough Thursday” trek. I met her in Washington Square Park, which I walked to from Union Square because I had to stop there again.

20130609-221408.jpg

After a brief walk in the park and surrounding areas, we headed to the Brooklyn Bridge, and yes… I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge! And took tons of pictures!!

It was really beautiful to see the city from this view and we picked the perfect day, relatively cool and overcast without being too threatening weather wise… but it probably kept some people at home, plus it was a weekday. We got pizza and walked around DUMBO before heading back to Manhattan. Next we went to Megan’s favorite place, Bryant Park. This lovely park has free wifi and so many free summer events I don’t even know where to start– yoga, movies… Just some of the things I’m interested in!

20130609-221645.jpg

Finally, we headed back to Queens and stopped by another park! (I love NYC because not only do they take care of their many public green spaces, but people actually use these parks!) Gantry Plaza State Park is now one of my new favorite places.

20130609-221742.jpg

As you can see, the view is to die for, and they have lounge chairs and grass and trails and everything. Not to mention its beautiful. 🙂

20130609-221826.jpg

And that wrapped up our day out, and we made it in just in time, as the rain was rolling in.
Speaking of rain, it has been raining quite a bit here in NYC, especially on days when I have to be at work! :-p Which gets old fast. But work has continued too well, I think the director of the museum complimented our work, that’s nice! And July schedules should be out soon. Friday was National Doughnut Day and a co worker brought some in to share, so sweet! I took mine home and had it with a cup of tea while I listened to the rain outside all evening.

Walking to work in the rain… Vs-

The sun!

Yesterday after work, I spontaneously went out to the movies with a coworker from Rain Room. We took the walking scenic way of getting there, which was fun because she walked me through some very beautiful parts of the city. I’m enjoying getting to know the people I’m working with. We went to see new independent film/comedy titled “Frances Ha” about a girl who is a dancer in New York and her life… Sort of, something like that. It was good!

Speaking of dance… Yes I dance–

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look at those, I know… That’s me!!!!!! And my brother, Jesse, performing our waltz is past semester at the 13th Annual Swinging Night of Tap in Atlanta. Huge special thank you to Mrs. Kathleen for these… And to all of DSoB and DCD for many years of lessons, performances, and work ❤ ❤

I'm looking forward to begin taking classes here in NYC now that I'm getting more settled.

On that note, I've been here a MONTH! It hardly feels like it, but it's true! I told myself a moth to see if this city and I got along, and as we have so far, it is time I start making plans to stay after Rain Room ends in July. I plan on spending this week updating my resume, looking at places I’d be interested in working at, and filling out applications. I would love to for for Mac/Apple, Swarovski, Gap, see if MoMA needs someone like me for anything else, something… And of course continue to look into the dance and theater world, Haha!

Ad that brings us to today! This morning I got up and went for an amazing run… I’ve actually gotten several good runs in these past few days (especially as the weather has been cooler in the mornings), so I am really happy. I really miss my running friends at Big Peach Running Co. in Decatur though… However, the VIEW I have to look at while I’m running here is pretty stunning, I’ll try to get a good picture for y’all one of these days!
Shower and brunch followed the run, then some cleaning of the room before throwing on a swim suit, grabbing a book, a towel, ice coffee, and heading back to Gantry Park for an afternoon of sun and scenery…

20130609-222219.jpg

20130609-222226.jpg

20130609-222256.jpg

Yes, that’s what I got to look at the whole time, talk about bliss! I walked around the park and took in all the angles of the sky line… And a lot of pictures.

20130609-222337.jpg

20130609-222524.jpg

Maybe the only little downer… I accidentally fell asleep on my chair in the sun for a good bit and didn’t apply another layer of sun screen before… And now… well… maybe I’m a little sore and red… But 1. I did it to myself so I can’t complain 2. I’ll have a great (slightly uneven) tan in a few days and 3. It’s summer! it happens! 4. I did get and apply some sun screen. It’s going to be cold and rain again tomorrow (while I’m at work) so I’m just incredibly happy I got to enjoy being outside today!

But I’m sure you are wondering how I’ve had all this time to sit about and write this long post?! Well, I’ve done the whole thing while sitting at the laundromat doing my laundry! Hahahaha, most of it anyway, the pics I’ve had to put in back at the apartment because that requires Internet connection.

And clocking in at 10:25 PM EST, Christiane has had a very relaxing productive day outside and is looking forward to work tomorrow and maybe been the rain!

I would… before I call it a night to put clean sheets on my bed, set an alarm for 5:00AM to go for a run and all… Like to thank each and every one of you following and reading my blog. Some of you I know, some I don’t… But thank you all! And please remember to comment, like, and share the blog!

June is bustin’ out all over

Name that musical!!

Happy June everyone!

Sense my last post, things have been running pretty smoothly…work and days off. The Rain Room has been running well, they got the leaks fixed and so far it has not malfunctioned again too much. And the lines have been growing every day, especially as the weather has gotten nicer. On that note- hello a week of nearly 90 degree weather and sunny! Ok I’ll admit, it’s been a little hot, but I’m loving it so much more then the cold rainy 50s we had earlier. Been drinking a TON of water and such on the job to stay hydrated.

20130602-091303.jpg

And look!! There is me at work with my fabulous red statement coat!

This past Friday was my last “free Friday” for the month (our schedules change for June) and I made cupcakes for my team of coworkers. I enjoyed baking them and relaxing before work that day, and I know they enjoyed them after shift. 🙂

20130602-090751.jpg

I’ve been getting many compliments on my outfits at work recently, I like that… Haha! Sometimes when I’m here in NYC and at work I feel like I should have a camera crew or photographer following my to take awesome city and adventure photos! Finding the right shoes for this city is still something I’m working on, but I’m waiting until the few pairs I have now totally die before I get some new ones… Always keeping my eyes open though and asking around what different people like to wear.

20130602-092650.jpg

I had Monday, Memorial Day, off from work and I took myself down to Madison Square Park and the Shake Shack again for a milk shake and a little walk around. It was a lovely day and it was nice to get out of the apartment but not be at work.

20130602-092800.jpg

20130602-092820.jpg

20130602-092831.jpg

I’m looking forward to continued exploration of the city and taking advantage of some of the free events in the parks and other summer events. I’ve been here for almost one month and as I’m still loving the city, I think it’s almost time to start looking for a more permanent job and place to live. Things have been working so well, hopefully that will continue!

Now, can I have a little sentimental moment? Please and thank y’all 🙂

As much as I love New York, there are so many things I am missing about home and Atlanta. Some things are sort of trivial– YDFM and good cheep coffee, decent prices in basic items in general!, fuzzy puppy dog and someone to take on walks, my car, pools and tanning being easy to access (which I really need to work on!!), my room, my own space, and my level of clean, running with Big Peach, or running 4 mi. a day in general, family, friends…. The list could go on. I miss having someone to love and spend time with… Someone special I can talk to and trust, go out on the town with or stay in with. I always see lovely couples on the train, in line at RR, or on the street and well, that’s just something else I miss. If I’m being too sentimental for any of you I’m sorry… But this is a side of things that I can’t forget about… In all my writing and time here, I have hardly cried or outwardly missed home, New York is amazing and work is wonderful, but home friends love are things I have missed and have the right too.

On a slightly different note, you know when you hear a new song that you really like, you can’t get it out of your head, and the you find yourself listening to it all the time?!??!! Well, I have come across some new music of one of my favorite artists and I can’t get enough!
I’m coming up with quite the summer sound track and for my commute every day 🙂

And on that note, I must get out and go grocery shopping, do some cleaning, maybe laundry, and who knows what else before work this evening!
