One the 2nd Day of Fitness!

Hey look ya’ll, I got to day 2!!

“Well rounded Core work (Pilates style), good stretch (Yoga style), and a nice 2.5 mile run! Fitting a workout between jobs can be hard, but it’s important to mix up your routine, challenge your body, tone your muscles, lengthen them, and include at least 20 minutes of cardio ❤️ listen to your body but don’t be afraid to push it a little too!

Thanks to Brooks Running and Gap for my outfit today!!”

So, today was kinda hard, but really exhilarating. It was supposed to be a “long”(er) run day- like 4 miles- but by the time I finished a thorough stretch and strengthening session and got to the tread mill I could tell my body would not be happy with me if I pushed 4 miles then turned around and sat at work for 5 hours. I opted for a strong short run and a great shower after and I feel great tonight!

I’ve learned and really tried to practice 2 things as I advance in my personal fitness world:
1. Core work and stretching BEFORE a run makes the running so much better! I feel more lifted and light on my feet. I notice I’m not as tight afterwards and I feel like I can continue to move the rest of the day.
2. Set goals and expectations, but don’t beat yourself up if you can’t keep to it every time. Like today, I wanted to do a longer run- but I had limited time and a busy evening at work ahead of me- I realized it would have done more harm then good for me today. So, instead of feeling defeated and maybe not even doing a workout at all, I did a hard, solid, very sweaty one and I ran hard till the very end… I also had time to take a shower and get cleaned up, eat, and get to work on time!

Fitness isn’t always about pushing and sweating, it’s really a lot about taking time for yourself and listening to your body.

Challenging yourself physically and mentally is also important, that’s how you work up to running further and faster, stretching for that full split, or doing the “Big 5 Ab Series” without a break.

What did you do today? Share, encourage, comment, like, follow, sweat!

It’s also on my Instagram, if you’re not following- you should be! @nychristiane

Lights up in Washington Heights!

Hello beautiful dedicated blog readers! I know it’s been forever sense my last post, but life has been crazy and I’ve been running all over the place. This evening however, am in my new apartment and I finally have some relaxing down time and reliable Internet!! (Yes, this is a BIG deal)

So I’m hoping to entertain you with stories and pictures from the past few weeks as I truly made the transition to LIVING IN NEW YORK CITY!!!

To recap, when we last caught up I was still sleeping in a basement, working just 4 days a week, waiting for paperwork to be processed, and embarking on a new (sort of) relationship.

Well, in short now I am living in a lovely 3rd floor walk up apartment with windows, working a very long and solid 6 days a week, not dealing with and pending paperwork, and more in love and committed then ever to a very special person.

But a lot has happened in between… And here we go!

I was the first roommate to move in… And what did I do? After personally moving almost all ov my belongings in one day via trains, which took about 5 trips from Queens to the Heights and back… I slept on the floor for two nights and cleaned the entire apartment… Yes that’s right and it was rough-

20130914-205355.jpg

But so worth it. One, because I’ll be living with 4 men… So you know, start REALLY clean. Second, I would feel comfortable bringing in the new bed, clothes, food, etc knowing the kitchen counters had been Clorox-ed and the shower bleached.
Did you see that in the previous line…. New BED! And it’s amazing

20130914-201507.jpg

Kyle and I went out and shopped around, making decisions together and getting one we both liked and could afford. I, of course, went all out with pillows and coziness… And I regret NONE of it! It feels so wonderful to come home after a day at work to a room with a good fan and bed and food.

The other roommates are arriving one by one over the course of the month and, as they are all buddies from OCU (and I’m the odd ball out) I’m getting to know them and such.

Then speaking of buddies, I took a long weekend off work and traveled out to Bellport, Long Island and the Gateway Playhouse to see Kyle perform in “Buddy: the Buddy Holly Story”.

20130914-204017.jpg

The show was so good, and I really enjoyed getting out of the busy city. I could actually hear crickets at night and walk calmly down the side walk.

On dark theater days, Kyle will come into the city for a few days to spend some time at the apartment. The first weekend he stayed we made breakfast together-

20130914-202747.jpg
And dinner-

20130914-202812.jpg

Then we went exploring in out neighborhood and found this–

20130914-202902.jpg

20130914-202910.jpg

Yes that’s the Hudson River and the George Washington Bridge I believe. This park is gorgeous and huge! Looking forward to getting my running back, especially now that the weather is cooling off again.

Basically I’m living the opening number from the Broadway musical “In the Heights”. But really though! Look up the opening number and actually listen to the lyrics and that’s my life!! Pretty cool.

What else, work is going well, now at 6 days a week. Which yes, is a lot, but I really enjoy going to work and as I work the evening/closing shifts, I have the whole first part of my day to do as I please. Recently I’ve been getting to the studio early and taking a Pilates mat or yoga class before getting cleaned up and clocking in. I’m really working in my core, flexibility, and tone… And yes, I know you’re thinking “well why are you not just taking more dance classes!??” And the answer to that is relatively simple… I don’t have tons of money right now… And I was more interested in having a bed to sleep in every night then class. But also, as an employee I get free classes… So why not use it!?!??!!! Plus it’s something new for my body and it helps me to do my job better– if I can help to recommend a class from personal experience guests are usually happier.

So that’s the job front… There has been talk of a possible promotion, but that’s still in the works and goes way over my head, to corporate, so it takes a whole anyway. But still, it’s a good sign.

So yes… That’s really where things stand for now. All that with many Target runs in between… Like really though. But on one of those trips we got a coffee maker and mugs, so my life is now complete!

20130914-204403.jpg

And if you can’t really tell, I have begun using Instagram… Sometime I’ll release my username and y’all can follow me… OR just ask for it in a comment here 😀 Eventually I’ll get FB updated as well! But one social media at a time, y’all should feel special for being the first ones.

I could ramble on… But I should go to bed. Christiane, it’s early… What the heck are you going to bed now for?? I know that’s what everyone’s thinking. Well, because I was up at 6:30 this morning for work and worked till 5:00 this afternoon… but ALSO because Kyle will be coming in from Long Island about 3AM and someone will be getting a call to let him in the building.., so may as well get a jump start on the rest. I’m excited thought because he will be staying here in the city for about 2 weeks between show tours, so we will be able to spend time together and explore the city together!!

So, until next time… Which I hope will be shorter then last time… Remember to like, comment, and share!

<3always, Christiane

May you be truly happy

So, I know I just posted, but New York living 101 wasn’t really a post full of fun personal stories and daily events… Well, this post will hopefully make up for some of that! It’s been an action packed week and there is so much to tell and plenty of pictures!! (It’s been a crazy hot week… Like hot humid and sunny).

Lets start with last Sunday- Mother dearest flew into LGA and we embarked on 4 days of craziness.
After dropping off our bags at the house we set out for Union Square and Loemanns!

20130704-194702.jpg

Mom was really excited 🙂

We explored and walked a LOT… I wanted to give her a more real look at New York. We did lunch at Shake Shack in Madison Square Park, it was (again) so good! Then we ended up walking up to Bryant park because I wanted to show her where we would be taking yoga in a few days. It was here that the trouble started… The lights of Broadway can just be seen from the edge of the park and of course mom found them. And so we went exploring in Times Square. I am so on my way to becoming a true New Yorker… I almost could not stand trying to get about with all the slow people! Bt it was fun and bright and beautiful. We found some shows we wanted to see– Phantom of the Opera and mom decided she would try to get tickets while I was at work the next day. After a long day of exploring, we came home to enjoy a cup of tea and sleep.

20130704-194814.jpg

MONDAY! Up bright and early we headed out to catch the train into the city for another day. I pointed Mom in the direction of Broadway while I set off for work. After successful getting tickets for Phantom and doing a little exploring of her own, Mom took advantage of my MoMA staff tickets and came to explore the museum.

We splurged on dinner out and had a true night on the town!! The. Of course…

20130704-194909.jpg

we got in line for the show.

And finally got in and settled.

20130704-195741.jpg

The show was amazing!!! Words can hardly describe how excited I was. As the music began to soar and the chandelier started to rise I could not hold back tears. (Last time I saw Phantom the chandelier had technical difficulties and the beginning was a little disappointing).

20130704-195018.jpg

Aaaahhhhhh!!!! Who is that with the chandelier from Phantom of the Opera???? It would be ME!!!!!!
And Mom! 🙂

20130704-195818.jpg

After the show it was home again home again to get some rest for another busy day.

Tuesday began with yoga in the park!

20130704-200250.jpg
A light breakfast, and back home to do laundry and grocery shopping. That evening while I was working a special event at the Rain Room, Mom ran over to the Broadway Theater to see Cinderella… Last minute… And she got second row center seats! On my end, while working this posh event for high paying members, the Rain Room decided it was tired and shut itself off in the middle of everything. 😦 this was slightly stressful and embarrassing but everyone took it very well and we had things back up and running and still managed to get over 400 people through in 2.5 hours!! Great night with great staff and members!

Wednesday was a LONG day with a 7:30am breakfast meeting (which was frustrating, but not something I want to discuss in this post), then 7 hours at work, and finally…

20130704-201128.jpg

That’s right! Mom got tickets again and we went to see Cinderella. It was fantastic! After the show Mom and I did something I’ve never done before- waited in line at the stage door to get signatures of the cast members! (Be ready for lots of pictures… Then this post can get into the more personal stuff, promise!)

Yup, that last one is me and Laura– the lead actress… Cinderella!

On Thursday, after coffee and a short walk through Astoria Park, it was back on the M60 and LGA for Mom to get back to ATL.

And now onto more personal events… Lots has been going on, don’t even know where to begin!

Jobs– I got a new job! Working hospitality at a really nice yoga studio in the West Side. I walked in to the studio to ask about membership and employment, then after talking to the manager, I got hired on the spot! To date, I’ve done 3 days of training and am planning on doing one moe before starting my closing shifts. Thank you ACN for all the background and training 🙂

I have also applied to work at the Apple company, to date I’ve been through 2 rounds of interviews with one more round to go if I hear back from them. I am being considered for my top choose store, in the West Side (feeling a theme here?)! I’m trying to stay very positive about this process, I’m very hopeful for this job. Things have been going well so far!

Rain Room has been going… Interestingly… To say the least. The lines have only gotten longer- for example the general admission wait this morning at 10am was 9 hours! Crazy, I know!! With the heat, people, and newly enforced restrictions in the room… Some things about the job have gotten more stressful, but we are all supportive of each other and had less then a month left.

I can’t wait to start looking for my own housing.. Although I’m holding off just a little until I know more abut Apple, so I’ll know how financially well off I will be or if I need to look for other things. So of course I’ll keep you updated with news as I get it!

Now, you may be wondering about my status, where did that come from? Well, actually it’s something from yoga class in the park last Thursday. During our ending shivasina (sorry about the spelling) our instructor told us to think of various people, people we knew… people we didn’t… People we loved… People we didn’t… People near by us and those far away… Those that encourage us and those that hold us back… To send to them all thoughts of being truly happy.
There were a lot of people I was thinking of during this time, a few more then others for various reasons… Readers and people who know me well can guess and figure out what persons I’m talking about.

I’ve been feeling a little lonely recently. I recently realized I really don’t socialize much now that I’m in the city or ever have plans with friends. I really don’t feel like I have many friends that I can just crash and hang out with… Much less someone to come home to or wait up for and talk with after a long day. I also think I’m in need of hugs! Really wanting my own space and for it to cool down (or for me not to have to work outside all the time)… You are just always sweating. If and when I have my own place/room, I’m really hoping to get a kitten and have someone to cuddle!!

Well, I think that’s it for fun and exciting things happening up here in NYC with me. I’ve been running and enjoying yoga, working full time hours at MoMA for the next month and adding in the studio. I’m looking forward to getting into a solid routine and begin taking dance classes soon. I finished reading Sherlock Holmes and am now working on The Secret Garden… Think I would like to reread The Geography of Bliss or Eat, Pray, Love next. Finished my 750 piece puzzle today…

20130704-211557.jpg

Not to mention, Happy July 4th!! I’m very very sad and disappointed that I missed running in the worlds largest 10k this morning– The Atlanta Peachtree Road Race. I am so proud of all my runner friends who were out there this morning. I heard the weather held off just enough for it to be a good run. Love you all and hope you ran well!! I got up at 5am this morning before work and went on a honorary run!

And on that note, I’ll sign off. Will be heading up to the roof with my roommates soon to see if we can catch a glimpse of some NY fireworks from across the water.

As always– comment, like, and share the blog. Thank you all for following and reading!

<3always,
Christiane

You’ve got feet in your shoes,

So steer yourself any direction you choose… And oh the places you’ll go!

~ Dr. Seuss

And may a interject that I’ve been going a lot of places… But we will get there, intro bit first:

Good evening everyone!

Yeah yeah, I know it’s been a minute… But that just means that the have been busy and exciting for me here in the big apple… And that this blog post (hopefully) will be fun and contain lots of good things that are funny!

I think we left off doing laundry with a slight sun burn, which I am happy to report is now a wonderful tan and I think I look great if I do say so myself, thank goodness for summer! (And aloe)

Moving on, it was a busy week at work. The Rain Room continues to draw huge crowds every day, and NYC continues to be a city of unpredictable weather! Some days it’s hot and sunny, other days it just rains non stop… And some days are a little bit of everything, which makes it really hard to dress for a job that’s outside. Knock on wood, the room hasn’t has any major issues or malfunctions, and when we are not catering to frustrating VIPs or fainting patrons, the lines keep moving (just slightly faster then a snail) and all in all things are going well. My coworkers are great and we are so supportive of each other, it makes even rough times manageable, with inside jokes and lots of laughs… Although the other day I’d say we all lost it at the end and couldn’t stop laughing at just about anything! But maybe that’s what happens when you repeat several hundred times a day– “Hi are you here for the Rain Room? And you have a ticket? Ok just to let you now the wait is four to four and a half hours.”

Moving on, I’ve been better this week about running more, some mornings even before work! Which is the habit I’d like to get into. I’ve also discovered, thanks to my awesome roommate, free yoga in the park! Last Tuesday and this Tuesday I’ve gotten up, ran, commuted to midtown and attended yoga, worked n my computer in the park (cause it has tons of seating and Wifi!!!!), then gone on adventures.

20130618-211426.jpg20130618-211436.jpg

Last week I decided I couldn’t take it anymore, I needed to go to Target. After yoga and a lovely afternoon updating my resume for job applications (coming back to this in a second) I hoped on the train to East Harlem and TARGET. Which was just as wonderful as ever. When it was time to head home I thought “I’m really not that far away from home, there’s just a lot of water between here and there…” And with that thought, and the amazing HopStop app, I discovered the walking train from Harlem to Queens and an hour, two bridges, one island, and some map reading issues later I was back in Queens, and feelin good!

20130618-211931.jpg

This week, my after yoga adventures included a walk to Grand Central and then all the way back up 5th Ave. as I looked at different Mac/Apple stores!

And that leads into the next exciting topic….. JOB APPLICATIONS!!! (Ok, maybe I’m making this sound a little more fun then it really is, but still). If I want to stay in NYC (which I do) after July and Rain Room is over, I need to find a longer term job and then long term housing (preferable with my own room, just sayin). So the task of looking through web pages, writing and submitting cover letters and resumes, then waiting to see if anyone responds began. I’ve started with 3 positions I’d be interested in– hospitality at a yoga studio (maybe I miss ACN a little more then I give credit to), the MoMA Design Store… Fancy name for the gift shop, and Apple… Mac… Like the computers (and tablets, phones, MP3 players, etc) 😉
Well, of those 3 (and yes, I’m still looking around), I got an email from Apple yesterday with some follow up questions! So I spent time today composing answers and such for that, hence my asking today to stop by various store locations, to get a slight sense of each one… Gonna try to hit two more tomorrow! If this job comes through I would be really excited, as I love Mac products and it would just be SO COOL!

Yes yes you say… But what about dance? Don’t worry, I didn’t graduate with a degree in Dance Performance for nothing, I just need time to get settled and comfortable, the. I’m jumping right back into a leo… Have no fear 🙂

Goodness, what else has been going on? Lets see…

I took some time to walk around MoMA, and like look at the art hanging on the walls. That was enjoyable. I’ve discovered the 5th floor is my favorite.

20130618-213331.jpg

Hey mom, remember that 2000 piece puzzle I did of “Starry Night”? Loved it right?!?! Haha, JK

Speaking of mom… She’s coming up for a visit next week… And I of course get to come up with an action packed, sight seeing, fun filled itinerary! It’s in the works as I type.

Otherwise, things have been pretty chill here. I had a craving for nachos, so I made some at the apartment… Megan (roommate) and I went out for FroYo last night and it was amazing! Made me think of Yogurt Tap in Decatur and all the fun times had there. This could also be a problem, because if I find myself wanting FroYo, I know where it is… And it’s SO CLOSE!

Oh! Yesterday I explored a new train and part of town as I traveled to West Harlem to catch up with my high school friend Imari, who also just moved to NYC. Although we hadn’t kept in touch much through college, as we really ended up going our separate ways, it was nice to catch up and talk with an old friend.

Well, that’s about it. I know I’m an old lady, but it’s 9:40 and I’m bout ready for bed… Especially if I want to get in a run tomorrow morning (maybe… Don’t hold me to it though).

There may be another post coming sooner then later with not so much experiences of the week, but of New York tips and thoughts… But that’s a different mind set for me, so not tonight… But zoom, cause I think you all would be interested!

And on that note… So long, farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, adieu… Adieu, adieu, To you and you and you.

Someone please name that tune, film, something…
And as always feel free to comment, like, and share!
